A Pop Song for the Ages
Except For the 4th Grade at Barrrett Elementary
The year was 2001 and Mr. Gary Wehrkamp (Shadow Gallery, Amaran's Plight, Outside the Wall, Harpazo) and I were in his 9th Street Studios in Allentown, PA. brainstorming about pop music. We decided the world needed a pop song that could be played on the Disney channel, sung by a young female vocalist but still have enough romantic tease to appeal to girls of all ages.
The first title for the song we wrote was My Loverboy. We recorded it and I sang the lead vocals as a guide for whoever ended up singing this future hit song. At some point "Loverboy" became "Wonderboy", and I think the reason was that I forgot to sing Loverboy for the final vocals and mistakenly used the word Wonderboy.
Meanwhile Barrett Elementary School, where my daughter Rachel was in the 4th grade, was holding a talent show for their students. Rachel entered the contest proposing to sing My Wonderboy. She spent hours learning the song and we were excited for her to perform our future hit song in front of a live audience.
Unfortunately, uptight, narrow-minded Barrett Elementary officials reviewed the song and felt it was inappropriate for her age group. They would not allow my daughter and My Wonderboy to grace their stage. She was upset but also learned a valuable lesson about censorship. Sooo...Maybe the song is a little racy.
I do intend to find a mix of the song with no vocals so you can sing it and send it back to me and I will post your vocal treatment on this page. But for now, we are not looking for a singer for this song. That ice cream melted a long time ago.
Gary and I are still working out a few of the technical details but no worries, we're almost there now. DISCLAIMER: My Wonderboy is not to be confused with Tenacious D's Wonderboy, a song title by coincidence and a story and melody nothing like ours at all. Besides, we haven't yet found the "Wonder Boy" mix. -The Management
